Augmented Reality
One of my design passions is augmented reality. While stuck in an airport during an eleven hour delay, I was alternating between playing Wizard's Unite by Niantic and studying Japanese in Duolingo. I had the idea of adding the AR experience to Duolingo, so out came the laptop.
The initial idea was to create a conversation flow in AR. The ubiquitous mascot, Duo, would ask the user how they are doing that day, if they have any plans, or about their family. Even with the rise of chatbots, these conversations would start off simple and be customized to the user's current skills.
Screen Samples
Below are three sample screens covering basic exchanges.
In the first screen, Duo is asking the user how they are that day. It is a simple exchange where the system could decide if between preset responses or a fill in the blank response.
The second screen involve Duo asking the user a question about their environment. If the software reaches the point of image recognition it could be the real environment or something added use Apple's ARKit, for example.
The third example is directly from the current Duolingo lessons, and involves translating a sentence into the target language.
